Celebrated over seven vibrant days, usually between March and April, this grand event is a fusion of devotion, tradition, and cultural magnificence.

Often referred to as the “Mother of all Poorams” Arattupuzha Pooram is renowned for its unique tradition—bringing together deities from 23 temples across Thrissur for a spectacular divine assembly. The event is closely associated with Peruvanam, Cherpu, and Tharakkal Poorams, forming a powerful festival chain that culminates in this celestial conclave.
At the heart of the festival lies the procession of over 80 beautifully caparisoned elephants, making it the Pooram with the largest number of elephants. The arrival of the Triprayar Thevar and the ritual of Kuttiezhunnallippu add further spiritual and cultural significance.
The Sree Sastha Temple, believed to be over 3,000 years old, is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa and becomes the vibrant epicenter of this celebration. Majestic elephants, adorned with glittering ornaments, march to the rhythm of traditional percussion instruments like chenda and kuzhal, creating a truly immersive experience.
One of the most breathtaking highlights is the Sasthavinte Melam, a grand percussion ensemble featuring over 200 artists. Held on the penultimate night, it is the largest musical assembly in any Pooram festival, electrifying the atmosphere with rhythmic precision and spiritual fervor.
The final ritual, Arattu, marks the ceremonial bathing of the deities at the Mandaram Kadavu river ghat, symbolizing purification and renewal. This poignant moment brings the festival to a reverent close, leaving devotees spiritually enriched.
Beyond the rituals, Arattupuzha Pooram is a feast for the senses—with fragrant jasmine garlands, vibrant market stalls, traditional snacks, and a carnival-like ambiance that envelops the entire village. The event draws thousands of visitors, from locals to international travelers, all seeking to witness this unmatched blend of heritage, art, and faith.
For those looking to experience the soul of Kerala’s temple traditions, Arattupuzha Pooram is a must-visit—a living legacy of the state's rich cultural fabric and timeless spirituality.
