Belonging to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, it is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, and is known for its Indo-European architectural style and the striking pink spires that adorn its exterior. A major highlight is the underground chapel, beautifully designed and considered a masterpiece of church architecture in India.

The cathedral was built under the leadership of Fr. John Maliekkal, and its centenary was celebrated during the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1986, making it historically significant.
